Manufactured Homes and Homeless Housing in LA | TMH 006

There is some interesting manufactured home news coming out of Los Angeles. As anyone living here knows - and probably anyone living in the US - Los Angeles has a large homeless population. It is estimated there are 25k individuals who live on the streets in the city, and 7k in downtown alone. Now a task force formed by mayor Eric Garcetti is proposing the creation temporary, transitional (6 month) shelters using using “trailers.” Trailer is the term the task force is using, and in this initial phase there will only be five of them. Three of the trailers will house 20 plus individuals each (67 total), with the other two trailers containing bathrooms/showers, laundry, and administration. So, these trailers may very well be different from manufactured homes as we know them. These five trailers will be on the city-owned downtown parking lot at Arcadia and Alameda streets. Also, should this initiative continue, future trailers will be occupy other city-owned lots.

So, will it work? Who knows, but in 1988 a similar program was attempted utilizing actual manufactured homes. They were emergency housing specifically for families, but it eventually was abandoned (I’ll go into the reasons behind that later). This venture will focus on individuals, not families, as it will be 20 plus individuals to a given trailer. I assume the accommodations will be in a dormitory style.

Right now, I am very interested in finding out about the configuration of living space(s), and as soon as I receive any clarifications I will make another post - with my views on them.
