Manufactured Homes and Germane Materials 03: Wall Covering Materials | TMH 011

In this post I am going to talk about germane wall coverings, looking at specific products and materials on the market that I find to be in keeping with my aesthetic style - mid-century modern. This is a continuation of the discussion started in TMH 004 and TMH 010. Any future updates for wall covering materials will be individual post, and I will do my best to add a link in the UPDATES section below.

I would like to mention at this point that I have not used any of theses materials or products at this time, I cannot vouch for quality, nor am I in contact with the manufacturers, sellers or distributors.

Flat Wall Panels | These products are simple, flat, or relatively flat panels.

1. Woodgrains from Decorative Panels International (DPI) - Product of the USA.

These are 4’-0” X 8’-0” X 1/8” wall panels using high fidelity printing. Each panel is made of what DPI calls Green Core S2S Hardboard which is made from wood fiber that is bonded with heat, pressure, and lignin - the natural adhesive found in wood. So, similar to MDF, but much more environmentally friendly.

Notes: These are some of the most affordable wood panels on the mark and are available for special order from home improvement store across the country - this means you could order samples from DPI, and them have a home improvement store order exactly what you want while having little to no shipping costs. Woodgrains that are especially fine for MCM homes are the two beadboard offered, Beaded Birch (11125) and Frosted Maple (11425) which have 2” spaced double grooves, along with Conestoga Oak (117), Honey Birch (119), and Light Birch (120).

2. Thinline, Wideline, and Plank-Tex from Eichler Siding - Milled in the USA.

These are 4’-0’ X 8’-0” or larger panels of varying thicknesses, and are made to match those designed and used architect Joseph Eichler.

Notes: There are three styles: Thinline - 1/8” grooves 1-5/8” apart, Wideline - 3/8” grooves 2” apart on center, and Plank-Tex - 3/16” grooves 8” apart with a circualar saw pattern. All are unfinished and paintable, with Thinline and Wideline being Okoume veneer (similar to mahogany but lighter). Also, unlike beadboard, these have single grooves not double.

3. Weldex Combed Plywood Tiles and Hardwood Plank from Vintage Plywood - Milled in the USA.

This is plywood and hardwood that has been milled to create a striated pattern. The Weldex is 23-7/8” X 96” X 3/8” and is unfinished pine. The Hardwood Planks come in various sizes, and are unfinished.

Notes: This is the same company as Eichler Siding above. Currently walnut, cedar, and bamboo are offered as stock for the Hardwood Plank, but the company is open to custom milling.

4. Beadboard, The Nature’s Woods from New England Classic - Product of the USA.

These are 4’-0’ X 8’-0” of varying thicknesses.

Notes: Some panels are unfinished veneer, paintable, or laminate. All are on a plywood substrate, not fiberboard. Beadboard comes in 2” and 4” widths. Panels that are especially fine for MCM homes are the Unfinished Birch and Unfinished Red Oak 2” beadbard, and The Nature’s Wood paneling (if you want a little kitsch). This company offer free shipping in the lower 48 states, but there is a minimum board order.

Semi-Flat Wall Panels | These products some dementionality or a noticeable texture.

1. Random European Wall Panels from Buy Faux Stone - Product of the USA.

These panels are made of prefinished Polyurethane Resin so they are completely weatherproof. They come in two sizes: 36” X 24” X 3/4” and 95” X 24” X 3/4”.

2. New York Brick Wall Panels from Buy Faux Stone - Product of the USA.

These panels are made of prefinished Polyurethane Resin so they are completely weatherproof. These panels are 46” X 33” X 1-1/4”.

Notes: The New York Brick has matching corners and edges available. The panels interlock, so it creates a true running bond, and have crisp sharp edges like actual MCM brick.

Dimensional Wall Panels | These products are highly dimensional.

1. Lava Rock, Woven Lava Rock, and Woven Quartz Wall Panels from Buy Faux Stone - Product of the USA.

These panels are made of prefinished Polyurethane Resin so they are completely weatherproof. Lavar Rock is 45” X 24” X 1-1/4”, Woven Lava Rock 44” X 24” X 1-1/4”, and 47” X 21-1/4” X 1”.

Notes: There are very interesting panels which fit in perfectly with MCM design - Woven Lava would look amazing on a fireplace, and all could be used on some the very unattractive cinder block wall that surround MHs. Buy Faux Stone also offers a number of stacked stone options.

2. Carlton Fieldstone Tall and Novi Faux Fieldstone Plus Panels from Faux Panels - Some product are made in the USA.

These panels are made of prefinished Polyurethane Resin so they are completely weatherproof. Carlton Fieldstone Tall Panels are 47-3/4” X 33” X 1-1/2” and Novi Fieldstone Plus Panels are 50” X 19-1/8” X 1”.

Notes: These are interlocking panels, so seams can disappear.

3. Wellington Fake Bamboo Panels from Faux Panels - Some product are made in the USA.

These panels are made of prefinished Polyurethane Resin so they are completely weatherproof and are 48-½ X 25” X 1-1/2”.

Notes: A little kitch, but has a lifetime warranty.

4. Wall Flats from inhabit.

Wall Flats are made from Begasse which is a byproduct of sugarcane production and contain no chemical fillers, plastics, no VOC’s, and no formaldehyd. They are essentially a paper product that act like drywall when finished and painted and can be used where drywall would be used. Each Wall Flat panel is 18” X 18” X 3/4” and come 10 tiles to a box - 22.5 SQ.FT total.

Notes: The style called Architect is probably the least contemporary and would fit in with an MCM home the best, and mimics Heath Ceramics Oval Dimensional Tiles.

5. Acoustic FeltForms Wall Tiles from MIO.

These tile are made from recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate Polyester and can be recycled. Each tile is 24” X 24” and vary in thickness. Three colors are offered - White, Grey, Charcoal. There are four tiles per box and cover 16 SQ.FT.

Notes: If you need some sound control, and want a 60’s mod look you can go wrong with these. Personal favorite is the style called Deco. It is 1-1/2” thick at his highest point. Free shipping offered on order over $100.
