Conventional Home Inspiration 02: Casa Aiola | TMH 016

Here is another home featuring design elements that speak to manufactured homes (MH). This is Casa Aiola (1960) by architect Eduardo Anahory (1917-1985) located in Arrábida, Portugal.

The first thing to take note of is the shoe-box shape. Very similar to the majority of MHs (and mid century homes in general). I’m a fan of cathedral ceilings in MHs to gain some height and openness, but this shows how well a flat roof and ceiling can work.

The next thing I was struck by was the layout being so similar to a double-wide MH with a structural wall running down the center (or near center, in this case). In Casa Ailoa, unlike any MH I have ever seen, there is interior and exterior space within the footprint - or in the case of an MH, the chassis. Interior is shown in pink, exterior is green, and the center structural wall is cyan.

Casa Ailoa is a vacation home, and therefore is able to be closed up when not in use, and this is accomplished by large scaled louvered shutters. These raise from the floor to ceiling windows and then provide shade. This is not an MH element, but does echo the carports that are seen on almost all MHs.
