Here is a little update on the El Pueblo Homeless shelters. To recap this was the installation of five manufactured homes/trailers at a disused parking lot in Downtown Los Angeles to function as a “Homeless Bridge.” Of the five trailers, three house 45 beds (30 for men, and 15 for women), and the other two house restrooms and offices. See TMH’s previous post Here.

Upon opening, the beds were filled within 48 hours, and there is a now a waitlist for when beds become available seeming to show that the stigma of the shelter may not be on the Bridge Homes. In some other good news, despite its popularity and community interest, they have not caused an influx of homeless individuals to the area, which was a concern. This may be due to an Enforcement Zone disallowing encampment in the area. The enforcement has been somewhat lenient with Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority taking a lead on enforcement over the LAPD.

It is too soon to comment on the effectiveness of the program in regards to individuals moving on from the program. There is no set time that a person needs to transition out, but the goal is three to six months (it’s been four). Right now, there are other Bridge Home spaces in Hollywood, and ones slated for Venice and another near City Hall, so the successes and failures came be compared across the program.
Stay tuned for updates!
